I am certain I dreamt in English before actually speaking the language. I don't know where such dreams came from. It has now beem my main language for decades, so perhaps they were prophetic :)

I owe so much of it to ... country music 😎

‘This yellow rose of Texas….’ I really SAW that yellow rose. Took a few years to compute that it was a reference to a beautiful woman! :D

So funny and sweet, as always with your texts! I remember those booklets with the lyrics so well, my parents surely still have all my CDs and cassettes with the lyrics attached.

brb, a universal nickname for all Barbaras - I'm dying, I might just call you that from now on hahah. 🥰

Imagine, BRB was when we left our desktop computer in place to go do something, now we take our phone to the bathroom with us… :)

Omg, too many things to relate to! I find hilarious the question about dreaming in our second language. I get it all the time, too! Not to mention the embarrassment when you realize you've been mispronouncing words for months, if not years. In my list of mispronounced words, I've got "lease," "saw," "sew" etc. Also, thanks for mentioning my article 🫶

And it's a never-ending struggle!! Last week I heard someone say "inventory" and my blood chilled because I've been saying it differently this whole time 🫣

Yours was such an inspiring article, thanks for writing it! 🧡

Love this! I think in different languages depending on the context, same with dreams. Sometimes it’s a mix 🫣 and I’m totally with you, some British accents sound very foreign to foreigners haha English for me is also the language of adulting, never thought of it this way but good point!

Yes! And it's so hard to explain it to monoglots (?). Sometimes it's easier to talk about traumatic events in your second language because that's more rational. I believe those theories that claim that we're a teeny tiny bit more inclined to be sociopaths in our non native language 😐

I love the creativity of language and how complex it all is! I’m always in awe of people who know multiple languages. 🙈
